About the Organisation

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) was founded by a group of sustainability leaders from the global apparel and footwear industry who recognize addressing our current social and environmental challenges are both a business imperative and an opportunity.

Through multi-stakeholder engagement, the SAC seeks to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability built upon a common approach for measuring, a common language, and evaluating apparel and footwear product sustainability performance that will spotlight opportunities for technological innovation and priorities for action.

The SAC comprises over 200 members, representing over one third of the global apparel and footwear industry.

Position Description

The Public Affairs Intern will support the SAC in managing European political stakeholder engagement programs, developing a stakeholder engagement strategy and framework that builds off the existing stakeholder mapping work and recommendations. They will work with a diverse range of stakeholders within the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. This is a unique opportunity to help foster collaboration between brands, manufacturers, NGOs and other leading industry players.

Reporting directly to the Public Affairs Manager, this is an ideal position for an enthusiastic and ambitious student or recent graduate looking to gain experience in advocacy.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

 

Support the SAC in all stakeholder engagement activities:

  • Proactively scan and understand the stakeholder landscape to identify and address key European political initiatives with potential impacts on Higg index development and adoption strategies
  • Monitor legislation and developments related in the fields of environment, social & labor, product footprint, and due diligence
  • Communicate information to European priority stakeholders to encourage participation in development of the Higg index and its adoption

Facilitate exchange on policy development:

  • Liaise with brands, retailers, affiliates and NGOs participating in the SAC policy task team
  • Assist with communication to the SAC full membership through content development on the SAC newsletter and intranet
  • Organize and participate in monthly calls, biannual meetings and follow-up actions

 

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Student or recent graduate in European Studies, Political Science, International Relations or relevant related disciplines
  • Good knowledge of EU institutions and decision-making process
  • Fluent English (speaking, writing); additional languages are a plus
  • Personal interest in Sustainability and/or textile industry
  • Diplomatic, energetic and enthusiastic
  • Excellent social skills to facilitate interaction and engagement with external stakeholders
  • Experience working with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Enjoys a fast paced, dynamic, challenging and team-oriented work environment

 

Compensation and Location

 

The SAC offers a fixed monthly fee/compensation in line with Dutch provisions for internships. Because our members are global organizations, the SAC staff sometime work early or late hours. 

This position is full time and will be located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The internship would ideally start in January 2018, for a period of 6 to 12 months. Deadline for application is November 30, 2017.
